Date Created: September 12, 2015

Date Updated: October 15, 2020

The school is committed to the optimal development of every student. Good nutrition and regular physical activity before during and after the school day are strongly correlated with positive student outcomes. Kingdom Prep believes that we need to create and support health-promoting learning environments throughout our schools, giving students the opportunity to achieve success. This policy outlines the school's approach to ensure all students practice healthy eating and physical activity.

Wellness Policy Goals

  • Nutrition Promotion: The school is committed to creating an environment that promotes students to practice healthy eating and physical activity. Students shall receive consistent nutrition messages that promote health throughout classroom, cafeteria, and school media.
  • Nutrition Education: The school shall provide nutrition education that helps students develop lifelong healthy eating behaviors. Nutrition education shall be provided to families via handouts, newsletters, website postings, presentations, and workshops.
  • Physical Activity: The school will provide students with age appropriate opportunities to engage in physical activity that may include the following components: physical education, recess classroom-based physical activity, and afterschool activities.

Other School Based Activities that Promote Wellness: The goal is to create an environment that will support students, staff, and parents' efforts to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Nutrition Standards

School Meals

The school meal programs aim to improve the diet and health of school children, help mitigate childhood obesity, model healthy eating to support the development of lifelong healthy eating patterns and support healthy choices while accommodating cultural food preferences and special dietary needs.

  • Meals served through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program will: be appealing and attractive to children; be served in clean and pleasant settings; meet, at a minimum, nutrition requirements established by local, state and federal status and regulations; offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; and serve only low-fat (1%) and fat free milk.
  • Drinking water is available for students during mealtimes.
  • It is recommended to only offer or sell those foods and beverages that meet good nutrition guidelines as set forth within this policy.

Competitive Foods and Beverages

All food and beverages sold and served outside of the school meal program shall, at a minimum, meet the standard established in USDA's Nutrition.

Celebrations and Rewards

All foods offered on the school campus will meet or exceed the USDA Smart Snack in school  nutrition standard, including:

  1. Celebration and parties. The school will provide a list of healthy party ideas to parents and teachers, including non-food celebration ideas.
  2. Classroom snacks brought by parents. The school will provide to parents a list of foods and beverages that meet Smart Snack nutrition standards.
  3. Rewards and incentives. Food and beverages will not be used as a reward, or witheld as punishment for any reason, such as for performance or behavior. We will not reward kids with candy. Only non-food birthday treats are allowed.

Fundraising

The school shall encourage healthy fundraisers as alternatives to fundraising that involves the selling of food items of limited nutritional value, such as candy, cookies, or sugary beverages.

The school encourages organizations, parents and teachers to raise funds through the sale of non-food items as part of the school sponsored fundraising activities.

Food and Beverage Marketing in School

School Wellness Committee

Parents and the public will be notified that their participation is permitted through social media, newsletters, and emails.

  1. Wellness Policy Implementation, Monitoring, Accountablility and Community Engagement

Implementation of the Wellness Policy

The School will develop and maintain a plan for implementation to manage and coordinate the execution of this wellness policy. The plan delineates roles, responsibilities, actions and timelines specific to the school; and includes information about who will be responsible to make what change, by how much, where and when; as well as specific goals and objectives for nutrition standards for all foods and beverages available on the school campus, food and beverage marketing, nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, physical education and other school-based activities that promote student wellness. It is recommended that the school use the Healthy Schools Program online tools to complete a school-level assessment based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's School Health Index, create an action plan that fosters implementation and generates an annual progress report.

Triennial Progress Assessments

At least once every three years, the school will evaluate compliance and progress of this wellness policy asess the implementation of the policy. To help with the initial development of the wellness policies, the school will conduct a baseline assessment of the school's existing nutrition and physical activity environment and policies. The results of that assessment will be used to identify and prioritize needs.

The school will assess how their wellness policy compares to model wellness policies. KPA will compare its policies to Alliances for Healthier Generation Model Wellness policies.

Revisions and Updating the Policy

The SWC will update or modify the wellness policy based on the results of the annual progress report and triennial assessments, and/or school priorities change; community needs change; wellness goals are met; new health science, information, and technology emerges; and new Federal or state guidance or standards are issued. The wellness policy will be assessed and updated as indicated at least every three years, following the triennial assessment.

Notification of Wellness Policy, Policy Updates and Triennial Assessment

The school will inform families and the public each year of any updates to the wellness policy and every three years their compliance with the written wellness policy.

The School Wellness Committee will make the School wellness policy available to the public through newsletters, emails and the schools website. Also, the website will share the annual progress report and the Triennial assessment when it is available.
